1. How much does a typical system cost?

a. Front Range/Westerns Slope Residential

i. Tract Home or Semi-custom <3000 ft2
Typical installation with a vertical ground heat exchanger coupled with 2-3 water-to-air geothermal heat pump units will cost $10-15/ft2 of finished space. This will typically include ground loop heat exchanger, heat pump equipment, ductwork, thermostats, and circulating pump(s). The average payback for this installation cost compared to a conventional furnace with DX cooling will range from 7-10 years, depending in part on the local utility cost for electricity, natural gas, or propane.
ii. Semi-custom Home >3000 ft2
Typical installation with a vertical ground heat exchanger coupled with 3-43 water-to-air geothermal heat pump units will cost $10-15/ft2 of finished space. This will typically include ground loop heat exchanger, heat pump equipment, ductwork, thermostats, and circulating pump(s). The average payback for this installation cost compared to a conventional furnace with DX cooling will range from 7-10 years, depending in part on the local utility cost for electricity, natural gas, or propane.
iii. Custom Home >6000 ft2
Typical installation with a vertical ground heat exchanger coupled with 4-5 water-to-air geothermal heat pump units will cost $16-19/ft2 of finished space. This will typically include ground loop heat exchanger, heat pump equipment, ductwork, thermostats, and circulating pump(s). The average payback for this installation cost compared to a conventional furnace with DX cooling will range from 9-11 years, depending in part on the local utility cost for electricity, natural gas, or propane.

b. Mountain Residential

i. <3000 ft2
Typical installation with a vertical ground heat exchanger coupled with 2-3 water-to-water geothermal heat pump units will cost $18-22/ft2 of finished space. This will typically include ground loop heat exchanger, heat pump equipment, radiant floor heating system, thermostats, and circulating pump(s). The average payback for this installation cost compared to a conventional boiler will range from 8-11 years, depending in part on the local utility cost for electricity, natural gas, or propane. Radiant floor heating systems will have an inherent increase in installation cost due to the gypcrete material and radiant floor tubing. This increase for the installation cost would apply to a conventional boiler system also, so the actual payback of the geothermal system is not affected.
ii. Semi-custom Home >3000 ft2
Typical installation with a vertical ground heat exchanger coupled with 2-3 water-to-water geothermal heat pump units will cost $20-25/ft2 or more of finished space.
